The Samaritan Woman

Begin in silence…
Close your eyes and sit quietly for a few moments before beginning today’s session. Breath in, and as you exhale, ask God to open your heart and mind to today’s scripture.

Set the scene…
Today we travel into Samaria to the outskirts of a town, Sychar, located in the modern-day West Bank. The well there is known as Jacob’s Well, situated on a plot of land purchased by Jacob in Genesis 33:18–19.

In the middle of the day, a woman from the town comes to draw water there and meets Jesus resting nearby. Choosing an uncommon time to be at the well alone, in the heat of the day, may indicate that the woman is socially disconnected from her community. Even more uncommon is that Jesus, a Jewish man, speaks to a Samaritan woman.
